McCain gives Democrats a Slingshot

People right now are worried about Palin, saying that she may be a "game changer" for McCain.

Of a certain sense, they're right - McCain changed the game such that he's now on defense just as Obama moved the ball down the court last night in spectacular fashion.  Follow below the flip for some of the great things there are to be said about Sarah Palin.

Sarah Palin is a joke of a pick.  Of course, everyone knows about the corruption scandal - she is alleged to have fired Alaska's Public Safety Commissioner because he refused to fire a soon to be ex-brother-in-law.  (Sources: LA Times; Anchorage's CBS-KTVA.)  Not only that, the investigation was begun by a bipartisan panel in Juneau, not exactly small potatoes - this issue clearly has legs, and if McCain later has to remove her from the ticket for this reason, he may as well retire to Sedona that day.

Secondly, she's already on record as having mocked the Vice Presidential office, saying: "As for that VP talk all the time, I'll tell you, I still can't answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day? I'm used to being very productive and working real hard in an administration. We want to make sure that that VP slot would be a fruitful type of position, especially for Alaskans and for the things that we're trying to accomplish up here for the rest of the U.S., before I can even start addressing that question." (Source: Politico, who is citing to Ludlow & Co., meaning that there's video of this moment ripe for a great television spot.)

Finally, before becoming Governor of Alaska, a state that has no serious budgetary concerns due to the Alaska Permanent Fund, she was mayor of Wasilla, AK, a village in rural Alaska which I'm sure is lovely, and I'm sure all of their 6,715 people will be happy to speak well of her.

So after all that?  My feeling is that McCain just painted a bull's eye on his campaign's derriere and handed the Obama campaign a slingshot.  For that, I'd like to thank him.

Tips for first diaries and slingshots :).

Thank you, John McCain, for helping the Obama campaign become Fired Up and Ready To Go!

Talk about a joke of a pick, this woman is such a lightweight.

Did anyone watch her speech? She looked like she was running for President of the PTA.

And yet, of course the media LOVES her.

Re: McCain gives Democrats a Slingshot (none / 0)

This early, it's hard to tell whether they actually love her or if it's just the dark horse excitement.  I'd tend to believe the latter.

The PTA comment is kind of sexist, but you're right; she's not much of a speaker.  She will not do well at all in the debate with Biden.

The PTA comment is not sexist, it was something my mom said while watching it and she was being honest. That's what it sounded like. She didn't seem to be taking this seriously.

Re: McCain gives Democrats a Slingshot (none / 0)

McCain's angle may be to use Palin's lack of experience to his benefit.  Dare any of us she she doesn't have enough experience, what will Republicans say?

Obama first term in statewide office.   Palin, first term in statewide office.

Obama served as state legislature.  Palin, served as a mayor.

Pretty similar.

McCain, I bet, would love to have us attack Palin's inexperience, because he knows what most know, VP don't mean much in the end.   People vote for the candidate at the top.

Re: McCain gives Democrats a Slingshot (2.00 / 1)

McCain: "Obama's inexperienced.  McCain/Palin represents experience to protect America."
Obama: "You know, I think highly of Governor Palin, and we've had very similar levels of experience in state politics - John McCain plainly feels that Governor Palin is qualified, so I'm sure he'll feel the same about me."
McCain: head explodes

Obama would compare himself to the VP (none / 0)

The top dog having to compare himself to the other parties second fiddle?

I dunno if I would want to go there.

I am just trying to look at this objectively.  It would seem McCain made an out of the box, savvy political play for many reason which I detailed here:

U.S. Senator; is a national office.  Obama's decisions affect the whole country.  Palin governs 600K people, IL has 24 times that.

You're exactly right, RichardFlatts.  The Obama camp knows this too - in their statement they mentioned absolutely nothing about her lack of experience.  Obama has more, but do you really want to be having that argument?

Re: McCain gives Democrats a Slingshot (none / 0)

You can't attack her on experience because if you're comparing the top of the ticket to the second fiddle, you've already lost.

But I do think it makes it difficult for McCain to make the argument.  The best way to work it is to keep saying things like: "By picking Palin, McCain has just forfeited the experience argument."  Make it CW.

Re: McCain gives Democrats a Slingshot (none / 0)

Right, I should have been clearer in the post.  It's not perfect, but it's somewhere that's going to be harder to go.  They'll still go there, but it won't be as strong.

I don't think it's an argument Obama would ever want to make out loud, it's something you make via media/CW.
