Congratulations Governor Palin

Congratulations Governor Palin!

This is no small honor your party has bestowed upon you.  Regardless of whether or not you are actually elected, you are the second woman to appear on a national ticket.  I have no malice against you, and I wish you personally well.

As to the politics?  I hope we freaking destroy your electoral hopes and send you packing right the hell back to Alaska.  You are, perhaps, more compelling than the first woman to appear on a national ticket.  However, you face no better odds than did she.

While I hold little (read as "no") love for the Republican party, I can certainly admit that there are others who have more experience than do you.  Then again, John McCain's got enough experience for any six people.  He'll just have to carry you on this one.

This is an interesting pick.  Joe Biden will have to watch it in the debate.  I'm sure that was part of the calculus.  John McCain isn't stupid, neither is his staff.   They're going to use her to drive that damned drilling talking point into the ground. She has pretty serious reformist credentials (more on that later) and a very compelling story.  She just gave birth to a mentally disabled child a few months ago.  We will hear more about this, I promise you.  The pro-life angle will dovetail with that pretty strongly, and the Republicans will play up the sympathetic mother angle.

For the record, I respect the hell out of her for having the child.  I'm a little vexed as to how she's going to juggle that situation with her new job application, but that's a personal matter.  I'm not mocking her and I'm not making political hay out of it.  I just find it puzzling.

John McCain has just made a huge pander.  Sane people will figure that one out pretty quickly.  I won't demonize Governor Palin for being picked, but I for damned sure think less of John McCain for picking her.

Let's take 'em down.

That would be a huge compliment.

I recall, during her time, every labor supporter hated Thatcher with murderous passion.

I lived in the UK for a few years recently. Apparently history has been good to her, because, these days, she is seen very positively.

(Never found even one politically engaged person who thought badly of what she accomplished.)

In Government there is a pretty widespread admiration for Thatcher's tenacity.

On the ground, however, among the working and middle classes, Thatcher is still very much demonised, and rightly so.

Thatcher had a hell of a lot more experience than Palin. Decades.

Palin is a female Dan Quayle. Totally out of her league. Biden debated Hillary Clinton 18 times, he won't have any trouble with Palin.

Bush still won in a huge landslide, and Nixon won with Agnew.

John McCain is against affirmative action, but he has just used affirmative action to pick his running mate. Yes, it was a good political move, but Palin does not have the experience that Clinton has, nor does she have the political talent that Obama has. The pick is purely political.

Uh, yeah. (none / 0)

Larry Kudlow of CNBC's "Kudlow & Co." asked her about the possibility of becoming McCain's ticket mate.
Palin replied: "As for that VP talk all the time, I'll tell you, I still can't answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day? I'm used to being very productive and working real hard in an administration. We want to make sure that that VP slot would be a fruitful type of position, especially for Alaskans and for the things that we're trying to accomplish up here for the rest of the U.S., before I can even start addressing that question."

Re: Congratulations Governor Palin (none / 0)

Listening to the attacks I wonder if this could be apart of the plan. McCain's campaign could point out that this is the route Obama should have taken. All the arguments against her experience seem to be valid (at first glance) but the same arguments can be made against Barack (and have in most cases). Now democrats will spend a good bit of time talking about experience; if it is important for the VP spot how much more important for the Presidential spot. This is going to be interesting

Democrats have lots of things to criticize even aside from the fact that she's only been in office for 18 months. The REALLY important thing is that McCain can never again ask "is he ready to lead?"

Because McCain is a 72 year old man with a history of cancer. And his next in line is a person from one of the least populated states in the union who has only held higher office for 18 months.

What It Means (2.00 / 1)

Andrew has the right perspective on this.  I only hope we can get enough undecideds & leaners to pick up on it:

he more I think about it, the more staggered I am by the pick. It's totally about electioneering (misguidedly, I'd hazard, but I don't know enough about her to know yet) and fundamentally unserious about governing.

The first criterion for a veep - and I'm simply repeating a truism here - is that they are ready to take over at a moment's notice. That's especially true when you have a candidate as old as McCain. That's more than especially true when we are at war, in an era of astonishingly difficult challenges, when the next president could be grappling with war in the Middle East or a catastrophic terror attack at home. Under those circumstances, we could have a former Miss Alaska with two terms under her belt as governor. Now compare McCain's pick with Obama's: a man with solid foreign policy experience, six terms in Washington and real relationships with leaders across the globe.

One pick is by a man of judgment; the other is by a man of vanity.

She may be a fine person, but she's my age, she has zero Washington experience, and no foreign policy expertise whatsoever.

McCain has just told us how seriously he takes the war we are in. Not seriously at all.

It's Democratic Christmas in August.

This is what we can expect when McCodger stamps his foot, making a decision on his own and ignoring the advice of his campaign managers, who are no doubt right now talking themselves away from the nearest window.

1.  If he looked old before, wow, does he look old next to Governor Palin.

2. McCain just took the heaviest hammer he had, the "experience argument" off the table.  Dumb. Dumb. Dumb.

3.  The day of the announcement, every other story about her has the word "scandal" in it.  Was she vetted?  This was the most qualified person in the party?  The most qualified WOMAN in the party?

4. Is this choice honestly supposed to draw disenchanted Clinton voters?  An anti-choice, under qualified former beauty queen?  Really?

5. with all the GOP rhetoric around national security and international affairs, and McCain with one foot on a banana peel, this is the person McCain is going to bring in to back up the war on terror?

Wow.  I can't wait for the Palin/Biden debate.

How hard is it, exactly, to balance the budget of...Alaska.  Money only flows one way in Alaska...IN.

All they need to do in places like Michigan and Ohio is talk about the differences between Alaska and just about anywhere else.

The pundits are saying this was the McCain campaign Hail Mary -- when they run the numbers on the electoral college they know they are in deep deep trouble.  Short of a party meltdown in Denver, there only hope was an act of desperation to solidify the Evangelical base.  And that's all this was.

Any "disaffected Hillary voters" or "white working class voters" drawn in by this were never the Democrats to lose anyway.  they were drawn to Hillary by what she represents or as the anti-Obama candidate.  Any woman who votes anti-choice was never a Democrat in the first place.

Indeed (2.00 / 2)

I'm a bit taken aback at how much I appreciate McCain's choice.  It was certainly a maverick pick bound to piss off people like Romney and the like, and basically throw the national Republican party to the wolves (we knew they were doing that, putting all the eggs in the presidential basket, but we didn't know to what extent).

I have always liked Palin and the sort of honest conservatism she stands for (she's not crazy like, say, Michelle Bachmann), even while I think her policies are a disaster.

We're better off for having an opponent of her calibre.  It will be unfortunate for me personally to witness Joe Biden tearing her apart in debate.

I like the tone set by this diary.  A lot of people need to watch themselves a little more closely, cause even if you think she's a totally underqualified beauty queen who was picked just for her looks or whatever, you need to find a better way of expressing that thought.

Now that the primary is over, some Obama supporters need to come to terms with the reasons why some stuff from the primary came across as sexist and offensive.  For that matter, some Clinton supporters need to come to terms with the reasons why overly dismissive attacks on Obama's experience came across as offensive.  Of course, the people who really need to learn these lessons are the Democratic spokespeople in the media, but I despair at the thought of them ever getting it.

Her expertise on energy is impressive. (none / 0)

I've heard Gov. Palin interviewed by CNBC as well as Bloomberg on a broad swath of energy-related topics: drilling offshore, clean technologies, oil fields services; she spoke with authority and knowledge, offering more of an economic than political perspective.

To assume that she has no strengths simply because she is also a "hockey mom" with a large family does a disservice to women, and it's unfair to call this choice tokenism. Especially when energy exploration and drilling is a high priority for most voters.

Palin Pleased with Obama's Energy Plan
Includes Alaska's Natural Gas Reserves  Print Now Printer Friendly

No. 08-135

August 4, 2008, Fairbanks, Alaska - Governor Sarah Palin today responded to the energy plan put forward by the presumptive Democratic nominee for President, Illinois Senator Barack Obama.

"I am pleased to see Senator Obama acknowledge the huge potential Alaska's natural gas reserves represent in terms of clean energy and sound jobs," Governor Palin said. "The steps taken by the Alaska State Legislature this past week demonstrate that we are ready, willing and able to supply the energy our nation needs."

In a speech given in Lansing, Michigan, Senator Obama called for the completion of the Alaska natural gas pipeline, stating, "Over the next five years, we should also lease more of the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska for oil and gas production. And we should also tap more of our substantial natural gas reserves and work with the Canadian government to finally build the Alaska natural gas pipeline, delivering clean natural gas and creating good jobs in the process."

Governor Palin also acknowledged the Senator's proposal to offer $1,000 rebates to those struggling with the high cost of energy.

"We in Alaska feel that crunch and are taking steps to address it right here at home," Governor Palin said. "This is a tool that must be on the table to buy us time until our long-term energy plans can be put into place. We have already enjoyed the support of Alaska Senator Ted Stevens, and it is gratifying to see Senator Obama get on board."

The Governor did question the means to pay for Obama's proposed rebate - a windfall profits tax on oil companies. In Alaska, the state's resource valuation system, ACES, provides strong incentives for companies to re-invest their profits in new production.

"Windfall profits taxes alone prevent additional investment in domestic production. Without new supplies from American reserves, our dependency and addiction to foreign sources of oil will continue," Governor Palin said.

President-elect Barack Obama spent the day thanking the people who helped him win the election. Obama's first phone call was to Sarah Palin.

I campaigned for Hillary (1.00 / 1)

because I worked for her as an intern and then a case worker in her DC Senate office on the causes of her life. My sister was a promising young student and was raped and died from a back alley  abortion because of an infection because she didnt want my parents or friends to know. Our family didnt have health insurance. My siblings are in Iraq and Afghanistan. My friend died in Afghanistan. Palin did not have a position on Iraq or ANY opinion on foreign policy LAST YEAR.

Today, she SCRUBBED her praise of Obama's energy policy from her website. It's in the cache:

If McCain is elected and drops dead at a moment's notice, I do not trust Palin AT ALL, irregardless of whether she has a son in Iraq.

I wanted Hillary, but I was relieved at the pick of Biden because I know he has proven experience more than Obama and Hillary combined. All i care about right now is the lives of the troops, my family and friends.

AND WHO SAID I THOUGHT SHE WAS A TOKEN BECAUSE SHE WAS "A HOCKEY MOM". DONT PUT WORDS IN MY MOUTH. I NEVER EVEN SAID THE WORDS "HOCKEY MOM". YOU DID.

This is about drill/drill/drill, and not (none / 0)
