Ruminations: Gustav and Palin

Didn't evangelists pray for rain in Denver and instead got a hurricane that will probably suspend Republican Party convention? It is as if God has a sense of humor. If 72 year old cancer survivor McCain were to get elected and die before assuming office, what would be the reaction in the country to President Palin- panic? How would other countries react? And terrorists?

I see this as an insult to Hillary

You know through out the primary I said, I was ready for a woman in the white house just not THIS woman.

but Hillary earned my respect and by the end I was hoping Obama WOULD pick her because i felt she deserved to shatter that ceiling it was hers. but in the end she was not picked.

and now Palin stands in line to get Hillary's legacy? and why does Palin get it? is it because she struggled and strived to get where Hillary was? is it because she is also a strong experienced Politician who has earned 18 million votes?

no she will shatter that ceiling because McCain wants to win and is hoping enough women, will only see Palins anatomny.

I was really hoping for Hillary in 2012 (if god forbid Obama loses) or hopefulyl in 2016, the Thought that the first Woman President or Vice President will NOT be because a woman fought up and claimed it, but because McCain is hoping enough women will only think with thie ovaries,

I am seriously just heart broken that this woman will potentially take Hillary's spot in history, I just can't believe that pander like this would work, but I just don't know.

I think she is a great person and I thought she had a great future, but to take this away from Hillary because she is a woman, and hey Hillary is a woman, whats the difference?

well they cemented my support for Hillary today.

Palin Is A Threat!

There is a lot of talk about Gov. Sarah Palin being very inexperienced and Quayle-like. Well I'm  here to tell you that she is a major threat for our victory in November. Why? Let's go back to the 2000 Senate race between then First Lady Hillary Clinton and Rep. Rick Lazio. During one of the debates Lazio went on the attack against Hillary and played very rough. What was the effect of the debate? Well the public saw Lazio as too hard on Hillary and was painted as a bully.

Then their is that memorable debate between Hillary and Obama and Edwards after Iowa and before New Hampshire. Obama and Edwards ganged up on Hillary and kept attacking her. What was the affect? After being down by double digits in every single poll Hillary ended up winning New Hampshire by five points. Why? Because women stood behind her and said the media and Obama/Edwards were unfair.

I was seeking a progressive Alaskan's view of Palin...

I certainly found this entry from today's Mudflats blog intriguing (and it isn't what I'm hearing on television):

Well, this Alaskan is sitting here in disbelief.  This is a total gift to the Obama - Biden ticket.  As the nation scrambles to figure out who Sarah Palin IS, the thinking people of Alaska are simply mystified.  I'll be posting about this a lot later in the day after I'm awake, (it's early a.m. here in Alaska) but first impressions: - McCain obviously is looking for the Hillary vote since obviously women need no other criteria than a set of ovaries to mark their ballot, right?  I mean women don't actually make policy decisions, do they?

He's  also looking for the Evangelical vote.  Palin, a creationist, pro-lifer will appeal to this crowd.  Her fondness for creationism in schools, and the recent birth of a Downs Syndrome child can't hurt here.

The pro-drilling crowd will be pleased too.  Why she's even suing the Federal Government for daring to suggest that polar bears should be listed as `threatened'.  Can't have those damned bears interfering with the oil rigs.

And did you know there is currently a state ethics investigation of Palin going on?

Then there was this comment from one of Mudflats' Alaskan readers:

McVictim picked a bible thumping breeder who has a pro Bush, anti Environment stance that goes beyond the ordinary.
It's clear they hope to grab some disillusioned Hillary voters and the Christian Right.
That alone spells defeat in THIS election.
It was a bad choice and I couldn't be more pleased.
Looking through Mudflats' background pieces on Palin I also found this comment:
Palin's meteoric rise to governorship, and unbelievable popularity both stem, ironically, from her squeaky-clean image, and pledges for honesty and transparency in government. So how about releasing the Alaska Department of Fish & Game's analysis of the polar bear situation? Oh....you won't do that? Hmmm. Could that be because the scientific evidence that was so incontrovertible it even persuaded the Dept. of the Interior, also persuaded Fish & Game? Transparency when convenient. Honesty when advantageous to your own `oil & gas' agenda? It's hard to stay squeaky-clean when you're covered with oil.

So I guess McCain picked her because she only had one house.

An argument for Mile High Stadium

I understand that the convention is already over and I wish I had realized it earlier but I have to say it.  Most people in the MSM and indeed here in the blogosphere refer to the site of last nights speech as Invesco Field.

I'm asking you all (especially you posters like Todd, Jerome, Johnathan, and Natasha) from now on to call it MILE HIGH STADIUM.  "Phooey," you say, "Mile High was demolished years ago."  Furhermore aren't there better, more noble, less nit-pickey causes to write about?  Certainly all these points are true, but let me explain my reasons before you dismiss this as moon-bat-ery.

As many of you may know Denver was home to a Stadium called Mile High Stadium from 1948 to 2001. Around 1998, after the Broncos finally won a Super Bowl, the owner of the Broncos, Pat Bowen, strong armed the city into building a new stadium for the team which they did using mostly taxpayers dollars to do.  The new stadium was slated to carry the same name as the old one.  However, once the new stadium was built, Invesco bought the naming rights to the stadium and changed it to Invesco Field, setting off a PR firestorm in the local media.  The Denver Post refused to use the name Invesco.  Citizens who had paid to build the stadium felt they had been betrayed and finally Invesco settled to call it officially "Invesco Field at Mile High."

So why should anyone care about a name?  A rose is a rose is a rose, right?  As George Lakoff would say, its all about the framing.  The importance of using Mile High instead of Invesco is that Mile High reminds us that the stadium was built on taxpayer dollars.  The name Invesco concedes the "right" of private companies to rename -- and metaphorically take ownership of -- a building that we the people of the City of Denver paid for.

After a speech like the one that Obama delivered last night, one in which he criticised this conservative doctrine of private companies freeloading on publicly funded projects, it just isn't right to call it Invesco Field.  Granted the stadium isn't a public park, but we paid for it and then Invesco slaps their name on it.

Obama's speech and this convention will be talked about for years to come, so when you write about it call it Mile High Stadium.  It doesn't cost you anything and it reinforces the idea that the building was built by us and not Invesco.  Its also going to make you popular with people from Colorado.

McCain/Palin Under Consideration

Wow.....wow....I wrote a comment just a few days ago (I'm sure it is HR by now) stating I didn't think the Republicans would do it. I was wrong. I also said I would at least consider McCain if he chose a woman who was pro-choice because it would make him more palatable to a larger group of democratic women. Well I was wrong on that one too. He chose a woman who is pro-life. I am a Democrat is who pro-life. As of today McCain/Palin can consider themselves under consideration for my vote.

I have said before and I will say it again. People come to the process for different reasons. Some women were in it this cycle to support the political aspirations of a woman who was qualified but found the party did not support their efforts. Democratic women have been unsuccessful in building coalitions to support their efforts to get women elected beyond the U.S. Senate.

The Republicans are willing to do what Democrats are unwilling to do; put a woman in the White House as VPOTUS with the long term look at becoming POTUS.

This is change I can believe in.

Hillary we need you to attack Palin plus video

I heard a clip of Palin's speech at the VP announcement; complete and utter pander to Hillary's voters....

Despite the fact she stands against everything Hillary stands for.

Obama and Biden can't do it, we need Hillary to expose how utterly unprepared she is.

In this video she doesn't even know what the VP does.

Reaction to watching the Palin introduction

That was pander-iffic.  Maybe it'll work, who knows, but her entire speech didn't mention one issue.  She didn't mention abortion or creationism or anything about foreign policy.  Instead she promoted Democratic Party talking points.

She played up unionism.  She talked about Ferraro and Clinton.  She made McCain the mantle of change.  Maybe it'll work, that's what scares me, but there's also a lot of room to fight back.

Obama needs to get out her position papers now and see how she fights back.  Meanwhile the press is excited just because it makes a cool story.  Who cares what this means for the future if it gets good ink?

So I'm both relieved and scared right now.
